BARD CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY WINS SUPPORT FROM AT&T FOUNDATION $10,000 Grant Will Fund Fellowships for Graduate Students Exploring Information Technologies and Environmental Policy Making

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The AT&T Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to the Bard Center for Environmental Policy (BCEP) at Bard College to expand the use of communication technologies in environmental policy making. The grant will be used to help fund fellowships for master's degree candidates interested in exploring issues related to applications of information technology and environmental policy. The Center's graduate program was launched in fall 2001 with the mission of producing leaders who can translate the science behind environmental and natural resource problems into creative, feasible policies.

"We are delighted to receive this special recognition and support from AT&T," announced Joanne Fox-Przeworski, BCEP’s director. "Our graduate program’s emphasis on communication strategies relies on keeping pace with technological progress and applying new information technology tools to strengthen environmental policy making. We are most grateful that the AT&T grant will assist us in setting up a scholarship fund for doing so."

The AT&T Foundation invests globally in projects and institutions that address a range of public concerns, including education, civic and community services, the environment, public policy, and the arts. As part of its mission, the Foundation supports innovative projects that address issues of technology in public policy.

The Bard Center for Environmental Policy was created in 1999 to promote education, research, and public service on critical issues pertaining to the natural and built environments. The primary goal of the Center is to improve the quality of environmental policies by facilitating the use of the best available scientific knowledge in the policy-making process at the local, regional, national, and international levels.

The Center's newly established graduate program leads to either a master of science or a professional certificate in environmental policy. BCEP’s unique modular program offers an intensive course of study, grounded in the sciences as well as economics, law, ethics, and political institutions and including communication skills, leadership and financial training, and internships. Graduates are prepared for careers in nonprofit organizations, government, and the private sector. The students in the 2001–02 program come from across the nation and abroad, including China.
