RENOWNED GERMAN PHOTOGRAPHER THOMAS DEMAND TO SPEAK AT BARD COLLEGE ON FEBRUARY 20
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Bard College Photography Program's Spring 2002 Lecture Series continues Wednesday, February 20, with a lecture by German photographer Thomas Demand. His talk, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 8 p.m. in Weis Cinema of the Bertelsmann Campus Center. The lecture series has been made possible by a gift from Louise Field.
Demand has been called one of the most innovative and exciting artists of his generation. Though based on actual places, his large-scale photographs, usually of interiors, are actually recreations of these settings made almost exclusively from paper and cardboard. His first major solo exhibition in the United States debuted at ArtPace, San Antonio, Texas, in September 2001. The exhibition later moved to the Aspen Art Museum in Colorado and will be on display at Site Santa Fe in New Mexico from February 16 until June 2.
Demand has had one-person exhibitions at the Tate Gallery, London; the Frankfurter Kunstverein; the Kunsthalle Zurich; and the Fondation Cartier, Paris. His work has also been exhibited in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; the Walker Art Center; the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; the Sydney and Berlin Biennials; and the 1999–2000 Carnegie International.
The Spring 2002 Lecture Series continues March 7, with Sarah Charlesworth, and
