INFLUENTIAL CONTEMPORARY ARTIST SARAH CHARLESWORTH TO SPEAK AT BARD COLLEGE ON MARCH 7

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Bard College Photography Program's Spring 2002 Lecture Series continues Thursday, March 7, with a presentation by Sarah Charlesworth. Her talk is free and open to the public and takes place at 8 p.m. in Weis Cinema of the Bertelsmann Campus Center. The lecture series has been made possible by a gift from Louise Field.

Renowned as one of the leaders of the postmodern photography movement of the 1970s and 1980s, Charlesworth was one of the first artists to explore photography as both medium and subject. Her work, which often appropriates and recycles existing images, is united by an interest in how photographs influence contemporary consciousness. In 1998, a 20-year retrospective of her work was exhibited at museums across the United States, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.; SITE Santa Fe, New Mexico; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego.

Charlesworth is a professor in the M.F.A. program in Photography and Related Media at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In addition to solo exhibitions at museums across the United States and Europe, her work is part of numerous permanent collections, including the Whitney Museum, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Her awards include grants from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Spring 2002 Lecture Series continues April 15 with Laurie Simmons. All lectures will be held at 8 p.m. in Weis Cinema in the Bertelsmann Campus Center at Bard College. For more information, call 845-758-6822.
