INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED PHOTOGRAPHER LAURIE SIMMONS TO SPEAK AT BARD COLLEGE ON APRIL 15
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Bard College Photography Program's Spring 2002 Lecture Series continues Monday, April 15, with a lecture by artist and photographer Laurie Simmons. Her talk, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 8 p.m. at the Weis Cinema in the Bertelsmann Campus Center. The lecture series has been made possible by a gift from Louise Field.
One of the most important photographers of the postmodern era, Simmons is best known for her dramatic and detailed photographs of dolls set in the carefully controlled environments of miniature rooms and houses. Her work has been characterized as offering an ironic cultural commentary on suburban America and raising subtle questions about gender roles and power. She is also known for designing, with architect Peter Wheelright, The Kaleidoscope House, a contemporary dollhouse manufactured by Bozart Toys.
Simmons's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions, including a solo exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art and a collaboration with Allan McCollum at the Sprengel Museum, Hannover, and the Kunstrum Munchen, Munich. She participated in the Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, in 1991, and in group shows at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. She is a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant. She received a B.F.A. degree from the Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia. She lives in New York City.
