BARD PHOTOGRAPHY PROFESSOR RECEIVES $30,000 PENNY MCCALL FOUNDATION AWARD

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—John Pilson, a visiting professor of photography at Bard College, has been selected as a recipient of a 2001 Penny McCall Foundation Award. Pilson is an emerging video artist and photographer whose works have been displayed across the United States and in Europe. He was one of seven artists to receive a 2001 award and was recognized for his work in new media.

Pilson, a member of Bard's Photography Program since 2000, has had exhibitions at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, New York; the Nicole Klagsburn Gallery, New York; Kunst-Werke, Berlin; and the 312 Gallery, Chicago. He is an artist in residence at the Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center in New York and has worked professionally designing multimedia presentations for investment banks. He received a B.A. degree from Sarah Lawrence College and an M.F.A. degree from the Yale School of Art.

The Penny McCall Foundation, a privately funded nonprofit foundation for the arts, was established in 1981 to provide support for artists. Grants are awarded annually to American artists selected by the board of directors from nominations submitted by an anonymous national nominating committee. Over the past 20 years, the foundation has helped more than 150 artists, including Kiki Smith, Marina Abramovic, and Lorna Simpson.

This 2001 grants are the first to be awarded by the foundation since 1999, when McCall died tragically while aiding refugees in Kosovo on behalf of Refugees International.
