CELLIST ASHLEY BATHGATE AND PIANIST BARI MORT TO PERFORM IN RECITAL AT BARD COLLEGE November 5 concert will feature works of Bach, Crumb, and Brahms

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Ashley Bathgate, cellist, and Bari Mort, pianist, will perform a recital at Bard College on Tuesday, November 5. Presented as part of the Bard Music Program's Community Chamber Concert Series, organized by Luis Garcia-Renart, the recital is open to the public, without charge, and will begin at 8:00 p.m. in Blum Hall.

Works to be performed include Johann Sebastian Bach's Sonata No. 3 in G Minor; George Crumb's Sonata for Solo Cello; and Johannes Brahms's Sonata for Piano and Violoncello in E Minor, Op. 38.

"Bathgate is a very talented young cellist, whose tone was right on pitch. She certainly has the makings of becoming a top performer in her field," wrote Lakeville Journal critic Peter Marshall of Bathgate's recent American Symphony Chamber Orchestra performance. A first-year student at Bard College, Ashley Bathgate, age 18, began cello studies in 1997 with the late Rudolf Doblin. Her next teacher was Ann Alton of Juilliard Pre-College. She now studies with Luis Garcia-Renart, professor of music at Bard College. Bathgate, a member of the Empire State Youth Orchestra for five years, served as the orchestra's principal cello, sections coach, and coordinator of string ensembles. She received the Barry L. Richman Award in 2002, and is an unprecedented two-time winner of the Lois Lyman Concerto Competition. Bathgate appeared as a soloist with the Empire State Youth Orchestra at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall in 1999 and 2001. She was also a featured young artist at the Saratoga Chamber Music Festival, performing with pianist Pascal Rogé, violinist Chantal Juillet, and pianist Vanessa Benelli. In 2002, Bathgate performed in recitals, benefit performances, and with the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra. In January of 2002 she was among the first young musicians to receive a grant from the New York Philharmonic Players Fund. A high honors student throughout her high school career, Bathgate also received outstanding achievement awards in athletics, foreign language, and academics.

Bari Mort, pianist, is on the faculty of the Music Program at Bard College. She "uses her excellent musical instincts with taste and technical security," wrote Bernard Holland in the New York Times. Holland also commented on her "big, generous ideas . . . pure phrasing" and "intense virtuosity." Mort made her New York recital debut at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall, as a winner of the Artists International Young Musicians Auditions. She has performed many solo recitals and chamber music concerts in the United States and is a member of the New York Chamber Ensemble. She has appeared with the International String Quartet, Da Capo Chamber Players, Musica de Camera, and the Phoenix Chamber Players, among others, and has performed at many music festivals. She has also appeared on PBS television's "Live from Lincoln Center" and on National Public Radio. Mort recently toured the continental United States for Columbia Artist's Community Concerts. Her recording of contemporary American music is on ERM Records and she can be heard as a chamber musician on two Albany Records label releases. Last February, Mort performed Joan Tower's Piano Concerto (Homage to Beethoven), with the American Symphony Chamber Orchestra.
