BARD COLLEGE WILL HOST A RECEPTION AND BOOK SIGNING FOR HIROAKI SATÔ, JAPANESE POET, TRANSLATOR, AND ESSAYIST, ON DECEMBER 2
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Poet, translator, and essayist Hiroaki Satô will visit Bard College, on Monday, December 2. The informal talk and reception, which are open to the public without charge, will begin at 3:00 p.m. in the faculty lounge of Kline Commons. Satô will be signing free copies of two of his most recent translations: The Village Beyond: Poems of Nobuko Kimura and Santoka: Grass and Tree Cairn.
Satô has published more than 30 translations of Japanese prose and poetry. He also compiled One Hundred Frogs, a collection of 140 English translations of one of Bashô's famous haiku; and From the Country of Eight Islands, the groundbreaking anthology of Japanese poetry for which he and cotranslator Burton Watson received a 1982 P.E.N. American Center prize.
His most recent translation, My Friend Hitler and Other Plays of Yukio Mishima, has just been released by Columbia University Press. Satô has published numerous essays, as well as translations into Japanese. The latter include John Ashbery's A Wave (Nami Hitotsu). He is a contributor to the New York Times Book Review, Asiaweek, the Mainichi Daily News, and the Japan Times, on topics ranging from poetry to U. S.–Japan relations. His own published poetry includes That First Time: Renga on Love & Other Poems.
