BARD’S LITERARY JOURNAL CONJUNCTIONS CELEBRATES NEW WAVE FABULISTS AT NEW SCHOOL EVENT Master of Ceremonies, Legendary Cartoonist Gahan Wilson, Presents Peter Straub, China Miéville, John Crowley, Kelly Link, and Musical Guest Stephen Merritt (Magnetic Fi

New York, NY — On Tuesday, January 28, The New School will host an event designed to entertain readers of contemporary fiction and fantasy. At 7 p.m. in the Tishmann Auditorium, 66 West 12th Street, New York City, renowned science fiction and fantasy writers featured in the newest edition of Bard College’s literary magazine, Conjunctions, will come together to mark the publication of the new issue, The New Wave Fabulists, guest edited by noted author Peter Straub.

"The sometime ghetto of horror and fantasy genre fiction has in the past couple of decades, through the work of a number of astonishing authors, flowered into a brilliant new world of literature," said Bradford Morrow, Bard literature professor and founding editor of Conjunctions. "Peter Straub has done an important service here, by bringing together some of the very best fiction writers at the forefront of this movement. Those participating in this major reading represent the cutting edge of contemporary literary fantasy."

Leading the festivities will be a macabre m.c., the legendary cartoonist Gahan Wilson, whose works appear regularly in such eminent periodicals as The New Yorker and Playboy. His most recent books are The Cleft and Other Odd Tales and Gahan Wilson's Gravediggers' Party.

Those authors who will read their work from Conjunctions:39 are Peter Straub, author of many best-selling and prizewinning novels, including Ghost Story, Koko, Mr. X, and Black House (with Stephen King); China Miéville, author of three novels, King Rat, Perdido Street Station, and The Scar and winner of the Arthur C. Clarke and British Fantasy awards; John Crowley author of Little, Big, the Aegypt series, and The Translator; and Kelly Link, author of the collection Stranger Things Happen, which was a Salon Book of the Year and a Village Voice Favorite.

Also featured is special musical guest Stephin Merritt, a New York-based songwriter who has written and recorded more than a dozen albums under five different band names, the most well known of which is the Magnetic Fields. The 1999 Magnetic Fields three-disc album 69 Love Songs garnered him international acclaim, selling more than 100,000 copies.

"A Celebration of Conjunctions:39, The New Wave Fabulists" is free and open to the public. For information call 212-229-5611.
