PRESENTATION ON FEBRUARY 19 AT BARD COLLEGE ABOUT NEW THEATER EXCHANGE WITH CHINA
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—A presentation and discussion about a new cross-cultural exchange beginning this summer between the Bard Theater Program and Shanghai Theater Academy is planned for Wednesday, February 19. The discussion, free and open to the public, is presented by the Theater Program and Bard in China and will begin at 6:45 p.m. in Room 304 of the F. W. Olin Humanities Building.
Jeffrey Sichel, assistant professor of theater at Bard, will be joined by Professor Xu Weihong, chairman of the Acting Department at Shanghai Theater Academy, and Professor William Sun of the Shanghai Theater Academy Department of Dramatic Literature. They will review the origin of their cross-cultural bilingual performance project, called the Bard Theater in Residence at Shanghai Theater Academy, as well as consider plans for the future.
This June, Sichel and seven Bard theater students, all studying Chinese for this purpose, plan to travel to Shanghai to work with students and faculty of the Shanghai Theater Academy, one of the most highly regarded theatrical education institutions in China. During the rehearsal process, the group will explore one central premise: that theater is a universal language which can be expressed in a variety of nonlinguistic forms.
In September, Shanghai will come to Bard as students from Bard and the Shanghai Theater Academy perform a bilingual version of Bertolt Brecht’s The Good Person of Sichuan in the new Frank O. Gehry–designed Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College. These performances will be free and open to the public.
