THE JOHN ASHBERY POETRY SERIES AT BARD COLLEGE ANNOUNCES FALL READINGS

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The John Ashbery Poetry Series at Bard College will present four readings by world renowned poets on Thursdays, October 16 and 30, November 13, and December 4. All the readings are free and open to the public and will be held in Room 102 of the F. W. Olin Humanities Building. Poets Tomaz Salamun and Peter Richards will read from their recent works on Thursday, October 16, at 4:00 p.m. Tomaz Salamun is perhaps the most popular and prolific poet in Central Europe today. He has had five collections of selected poetry published in English, including The Selected Poems of Tomaz Salamun; The Shepherd, The Hunter; The Four Questions of Melancholy; and Feast. National Public Radio commentator Andrei Codrescu called Salamun’s A Ballad for Metka Krasovec “quite dazzling,” adding, “The long poem that opens this collection is sheer condensed delight, cross-hatched with near-familiar American sound and metaphorically rich Slovenian. Salamun is one of ours, that is to say, a four-star transcultural carrier!” Salamun has received numerous awards and prizes and has been a visiting writer at Vermont College, the University of Iowa, Sarah Lawrence College, Harvard University, Columbia University, Georgia State University, University of Massachusetts–Amherst, Emory University, and the University of Mississippi. He was cultural attaché to the Slovenian Consulate General in New York City, prior to his return to Ljubljana. Peter Richards’s honors include an Iowa Arts Fellowship, Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Grant in Poetry, NEA Writer in Residence, John Logan Award, Academy of American Poets Prize, and Massachusetts Center for the Book Honors Award. He is the author of two poetry collections, Oubliette and Nude Siren, and currently teaches at Tufts and Harvard Universities. Since 1995, the John Ashbery Poetry Series has brought leading contemporary poets to Bard for readings and discussion in an intimate setting.
