PERFORMANCE OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE SHADOW PUPPET THEATER AT BARD COLLEGE ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-The Office of Student Activities and Student Life Programming at Bard College presents a performance of traditional Chinese puppet theater on Friday, November 14. The program, Tiger Tales, will begin at 8:00 p.m. in the multipurpose room of the Bertelsmann Campus Center. Admission is free for the Bard community, but there is a $5 charge for the general public.

Performed by Chinese Theatre Works and based on Chinese folktales and literature, Tiger Tales humorously relates the survival of the small and powerless in today's modern jungle. The tales, told by a wise, old rabbit to her granddaughter, are adventures of her eventful life, including many hair-raising encounters with Tiger, the reigning king of the jungle. The star performers of Tiger Tales are exquisite, 80- to 100-year-old leather-wrought, shadow figures. New puppets have been designed. based on these antique figures, by the artist who created the puppets for the Lion King. These figures are projected using a modern overhead projector. This new shadow format creates a large projected image, allowing even the smallest details to be visible.

The performance is in English and is suitable for general audiences of all ages. The narration is accompanied by arrangements of traditional Chinese music. The audience will be able to ask questions of the shadow puppeteers and to view the puppets up close following the performance.

Tiger Tales is the newest shadow puppet production by Chinese Theatre Works, the only theatrical company in North America presenting professional productions of traditional Chinese shadow puppetry. Their performances feature an artful blend of Eastern and Western, as well as ancient and contemporary, puppetry techniques.

This production is made possible in part with grants from the New York State Council on the Arts and the Henson Foundation. For further information, call 845-758-7099.
