CONJUNCTIONS: 41, TWO KINGDOMS, EXPLORES LIFE’S DUALITY THROUGH NEW FICTION, POETRY, AND ESSAYS Issue Also Features Tribute to William Gaddis, Edited by Rick Moody, with Works by Don DeLillo, Paul Auster, Russell Banks, Sven Birkets, Joanna Scott

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. ¾ The title of Conjunctions: 41, Two Kingdoms, derives from a wistful passage in a letter by Edward Lear: "The misalignment of emotions before sailing to Corfu. The eternal battle of two kingdoms: staying, departing; home, casting memory back to home." For this latest issue of Bard College’s innovative biannual literary journal, guest editor Howard Norman sought works from both new and established writers exploring the subject of duality in our lives. "Based on some of my own favorite works of fiction, I could imagine all sorts of scenarios, all sorts of dualistic structures, all sorts of bifurcations," he says. "I cannot pretend to ever fully comprehend the duet of the conscious and unconscious minds - in a poem or in prose - but I can say each and every one of the splendid contributions to this anthology contains the resonant duality of (as Lear said of a Greek landscape) ‘the blessedly clear light- and the blessedly mysterious darkness’."

Conjunctions: 41, Two Kingdoms, features previously unpublished new fiction, poetry, essays, and multigenre works addressing the theme of duality, in all its aspects, as an inescapable element of the human condition. Contributors include Steve Erickson, Jerome Rothenberg, Susan Howe, Siri Hustvedt, Madison Smartt Bell, Michael Palmer, Merle Collins, Carole Maso, James Tate, David Antin, Leslie Scalapino, Brian Evenson, and the late Reetika Vazirani, among others. Included is an interview with Norman Manea on exile and translation.

This issue also features a special memoir/tribute "A William Gaddis Portfolio," edited by Rick Moody, featuring tributes to the great American novelist William Gaddis by such respected and adventurous writers as Paul Auster, Russell Banks, Susan Cheever, Ben Marcus, Sven Birkerts, Robert Coover, Don DeLillo, Bradford Morrow, Joanna Scott, Cynthia Ozick, Maureen Howard, Jonathan Lethem, Joseph McElroy, Stewart O’Nan, Joseph Tabbi, and William H. Gass.

Conjunctions is edited by Bradford Morrow and is published twice yearly by Bard College. To order a copy, call the Conjunctions office at 845-758-1539 or write to Conjunctions, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY 12504-5000. Visit the Conjunctions website at www.conjunctions.com.
