LEADING CHINESE ECONOMIST EDWARD CHEN TO DISCUSS GROWTH IN CHINA AT BARD COLLEGE ON MARCH 16

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—On Tuesday, March 16, Edward K. Y. Chen, noted economist and president of Lignan University in Hong Kong, will discuss issues surrounding growth and sustainability in China. His talk, "Is China's Hypergrowth Sustainable?", is presented by Bard in China with support from the Freeman Undergraduate Asian Studies Initiative. It is free and open to the public and takes place at 8 p.m. in room 115 of the Olin Language Center.

For the past 10 years, China's economy has been growing at an average rate of 8 percent per year. How much longer can this last? Are worrisome signs—such as inflation rates, property and stock-market bubbles, bottlenecks in transportation, fuel and raw materials supply problems, or undervalued foreign exchange rates—on the horizon? Chen will explore these and other questions about China's growth and future.

Chen's research interests focus on economic development problems, with special reference to the newly industrialized economies of Asia. He is particularly interested in the economics of technological change. Chen has also been interested in the changing pattern of foreign direct investment and the role of multinational corporations in economic development and technology transfer. He is a pioneer in studies on newly industrialized economies. His books include Hyper-Growth in Asian Economies, Multinational Corporations, Technology and Employment, The New Multinationals, Foreign Direct Investment in Asia, Transnational Corporations and Technology Transfer in Developing Countries, and Asia’s Borderless Economy. Also, Chen has published more than 100 articles in books and international academic journals on developing economies.

Chen received a B.A. and M.Soc.Sc. from Hong Kong University and a Ph.D. from Oxford University. From 1979 to 1995, he was director of the Centre of Asian Studies and in 1986 was appointed Chair Professor at the University of Hong Kong. He has held visiting appointments at Yale, Oxford, and Stockholm Universities and the University of California, Davis. He has served as a member of Time magazine’s board of economists. He was selected as a Distinguished Fulbright Scholar in 1998 to conduct lecture tours in the United States. His experience in the commercial sector includes serving as a director of the First Pacific Company, Asia Satellite Telecommunications Holdings Ltd., Wharf Holdings Ltd., and as a trustee of Eaton Vance Management Funds. He was a non-executive director of the Securities and Futures Commission from 1991-95, a board member of the Mass Transit Railway Corporation of Hong Kong from 1992-99, and a board member of the Applied Science and Technology Research Institute.

He was a member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong in 1991-92, and a member of the Executive Council of Hong Kong, 1992-97. He is currently chairman of the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation.
