ISRAEL IN MORE THAN ONE DIMENSION, AN EXHIBITION OF PHOTOGRAPHS BY YISHAY GARBASZ, WILL BE ON VIEW AT BARD’S BERTELSMANN CAMPUS CENTER DURING THE MONTH OF APRIL

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—An exhibition of photographs, Israel in More than One Dimension, will be on view at Bard College during the month of April. Each week a different sequence of photos will be shown. Photographer Yishay Garbasz, a senior at Bard College, took these images in Israel over the 2004 winter break. They will be on display daily in the hallway of the Bertelsmann Campus Center from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Israel in More than One Dimension is an exhibition of huge images that reveal "the good and the ugly" in the Israel/Palestine situation, according to Garbasz. His images ask the viewer to be curious, to wonder, to suspend judgment, to enter the reality of the scene, and to decide for oneself.

Garbasz states that the inspiration for the exhibition came from his "dismay at the spin being put on Israel and the Palestinian situation, by both the left and by the right." In order to do something about this he wrote to the Avi Chai Foundation, which provided him with funds to take a week’s worth of photographs of both Palestinians and Israelis. Seeking to present a balanced view, with his photographer's eye Garbasz tries to honestly show the reality of life for both groups.

Garbasz, who served in the Israeli military, is a photographer assisting at New Yorker magazine, a dancer, and a liberal. A senior at Bard College, he was just named a Thomas J. Watson Fellow for 2004–05.
