ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Huston Smith, author of the definitive, best-selling text The World’s Religions, will lead a weekend seminar titled “Religion-Based Activism: Religious Wisdom and Social Change,” at Miriam’s Well, from Friday, August 20, through Sunday, August 22. Copresented by the Institute of Advanced Theology at Bard and Miriam’s Well, admission for the seminar is $275, $125 for members of the IAT, or $50 for Bard students, faculty, and staff. Watson Professor of Religion and Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, at Syracuse University. For 15 years he was professor of philosophy at M.I.T. and for a decade before that he taught at Washington University in St. Louis. Most recently he has served as visiting professor of religious studies at the University of California at Berkeley. Holder of 12 honorary degrees, Smith has written 14 books including Why Religion Matters, which won the Wilbur Award for the best book on religion published in 2001. In 1996 Bill Moyers devoted a five-part PBS special, The Wisdom of Faith with Huston Smith, to his life and work. Smith’s film documentaries on Hinduism, Tibetan Buddhism, and Sufism have all won international awards, and the Journal of Ethnomusicology lauded his discovery of Tibetan multiphonic chanting as “an important landmark in the study of music.” The Institute of Advanced Theology was established to foster critical understanding based on scholarship, which aims to make true religious pluralism possible. Since its inception in 1996, the Institute’s work has focused on how religions influence history, society, and other religions, and are in turn influenced by them.
