PHOTOGRAPHER AND ARTIST ARLENE BECKER TO DISPLAY WORKS AT BARD COLLEGE CAMPUS CENTER OCTOBER 8–24 Opening Reception for Fresh Triviality to Take Place October 8

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. — This fall, Bard College will host an exhibition of works from artist and photographer Arlene Becker. The exhibition, Fresh Triviality, will be on display October 8–24 in the Bertelsmann Campus Center. There will be an opening reception with the artist on Friday, October 8, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Becker is a photographer and artist who studies the scenes of the everyday and then, using digital tools, highlights or alters only certain meaningful elements within the scene to create almost eerie tableaux that signify issues of identification and individuation. Becker's haunting imagery explores everyday icons in American society. Such diverse venues as fast food restaurants, churches, and public festivals are the settings for these narratives of solitude, longing, alienation, and connection. Social interaction and lack thereof is the motif that repeats itself in Becker's estranged, Hopper-like landscapes. Becker’s works have been displayed in numerous museums, galleries, and colleges and universities across the United States, including at the Society for Contemporary Photography, Kansas City; Flatfile Gallery, Chicago; Albuquerque Museum, Albuquerque; and Center for Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico. She is the recipient of a Farmington Museum Regional Exhibit Award, a Hubbard Museum of the West photography award, a Yaddo Fellowship, a Whirlpool Foundation National Sculpture Competition award, and two artist in residence grants from the Illinois Arts Council. She has an M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Becker lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. For more information, call 845-758-7649 or contact the artist at [email protected].
