JOHN ASHBERY POETRY SERIES AT BARD COLLEGE PRESENTS A READING BY BARD PROFESSORS MARY CAPONEGRO AND ROBERT KELLY

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The John Ashbery Poetry Series presents the first reading of fall 2004, with Bard professors Mary Caponegro and Robert Kelly, on Thursday, October 21. Free and open to the public, the program will begin at 5:00 p.m. in the Weis Cinema of the Bertelsmann Campus Center. Mary Caponegro, the Richard B. Fisher Family Professor in Literature and Writing at Bard, is a 1978 graduate of Bard College and received a master’s degree from Brown University. She is the author of four short story collections: Tales from the Next Village, The Star Café, Five Doubts, and The Complexities of Intimacy. She has contributed to major literary publications such as Review of Contemporary Fiction, Epoch, Conjunctions, Sulfur, Gargoyle, and Iowa Review. Caponegro is the recipient of the General Electric Foundation Award for Younger Writers, a Rome Prize Fellowship in Literature, the Bruno Arcudi Award, and the Charles Flint Kellogg Award in Arts and Letters from Bard College. Robert Kelly, Asher B. Edelman Professor of Literature, has been a member of the Bard faculty since 1961. He is the author of many collections of poetry, including The Common Shore, The Loom, Kill the Messenger, Not this Island Music, The Flowers of Unceasing Coincidence, A Strange Market, Red Actions, The Time of Voice, and The Garden of Distances. His fiction works include A Transparent Tree, Doctor of Silence, Cat Scratch Fever, and The Queen of Terrors. Kelly has received the Los Angeles Times Prize for Poetry as well as awards and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, CAPS, and the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. He is the founding editor of Chelsea Review and Trobar, and contributing editor to Caterpillar, Sulfur, Alcheringa:Ethnopoetics, and Conjunctions. Kelly is the founding director of the writing program of the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts. Since 1995, the John Ashbery Poetry Series has brought leading contemporary poets to Bard for readings and discussion in an intimate setting.
