BARD IN CHINA TO HOST LECTURE ON 20th CENTURY CHINESE NATIONAL LAWS ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—On Tuesday, November 8, historian Dan Shao will present a lecture on China’s Nationality Law of 1929. Her talk, “Chinese By Definition: The Making and Practice of Nationality Law, 1909-1980,” explores issues related to the evolution and application of China’s 1929 National Law. The talk takes place at 4:30 p.m. in room 115 of the Olin Humanities Building. The talk is presented by Bard in China, with support from the Freeman Undergraduate Asian Studies Initiative. Shao is an assistant professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has taught or lectured previously at Ohio University and the University of California, Santa Barbara, and was a postdoctoral fellow at Fairbank Center for East Asian Research, Harvard University. She has made presentations across the United States and in Asia on the subject of nationality law in China. She is a member of the Association for Asian Studies and the American Historical Association. Shao has a Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Santa Barbara; an M.A. in East Asian-American diplomatic history from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale; and a B.A. in English literature and linguistics from Nanjing University in China.
