BARD IN CHINA TO HOST LECTURE ON THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF CHINA’S ECONOMIC SUCCESS ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—On Thursday, November 17, Joshua Muldavin, an expert on environmental issues in Asia, will present a lecture on the environmental and social implications of China’s recent economic success. His talk, “From Rural Transformation to Global Integration: the Real Story about China's Rise to Superpower,” takes place at 4:30 p.m. in room 115 of the Olin Humanities Building. The talk is presented by Bard in China, with support from the Freeman Undergraduate Asian Studies Initiative. China’s economic successes since 1978 are undeniable. But shortcomings and failures of the post-Maoist reforms are also undeniable, according to Muldavin, and are the inevitable outgrowth of China’s chosen path. China’s rapid growth of the last two and a half decades has been built upon a base of environmental destruction and social decay. In this process the state has lost much of its legitimacy with the country’s majority, and is now challenged by direct and indirect forms of resistance. As China’s global integration accelerates, this paradox of growth built on decay has created a shaky foundation for arguably the world’s most important new superpower. This has important implications not only for China but also for the world. Joshua Muldavin is Henry R. Luce Professor of Asian Studies and Human Geography at Sarah Lawrence College, and is former chair and director of international development studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He has conducted research in China for over 20 years, and is currently writing a book on the social and environmental impacts of China’s reforms and global integration. He is the recipient of Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, Fulbright, UCLA, and Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation grants. He received a B.S. in conservation and natural resources and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in geography, University of California, Berkeley.
