THE BARD GLOBALIZATION AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS PROGRAM PRESENTS THE JAMES CLARKE CHACE MEMORIAL SPEAKER SERIES THIS SPRING IN NEW YORK CITY

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Bard Globalization and International Affairs (BGIA) Program will present the James Clarke Chace Memorial Speaker Series on four Thursdays this spring. The lectures are free and open to the public and take place at Bard Hall, 410 West 58th Street, New York. Reservations are required, as seating is limited. “Investigating Saddam Hussein: Lessons Learned from the Balkans” is the topic of the first program in the series on Thursday, February 23, at 6:15 p.m., with a presentation by Richard Dicker, director, International Justice Program, Human Rights Watch, and Tom Parker, former U. K. special adviser on transitional justice, head of the Crimes Against Humanity investigation unit, Coalition Provisional Authority, and former investigator, International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Fareed Zakaria, editor of Newsweek International and author of The Future of Freedom, is the speaker for the second program in the series on Thursday, March 2, at 6:15 p.m. The topic of his talk is “America and the World.” Preregistration is required for this program. On Thursday, April 27, at 6:15 p.m., Michael Klare, Five College Professor of Peace and World Security Studies, Hampshire College, and author of Blood and Oil and Resource Wars: The New Landscape of Global Conflict, and Mark Lytle, professor of history at Bard and author of America’s Uncivil Wars: The Sixties Era from Elvis to the Fall of Richard Nixon, will discuss “Water Wars.” The final lecture in the spring series is on Thursday, May 11, at 6:15 p.m. Elisabeth Sifton, author of The Serenity Prayer: Faith and Politics in Times of Peace and War and senior vice president of Farrar, Straus & Giroux, discusses “Do Evangelicals Have Too Much Influence in Foreign Policy?” The series is named in honor of James Clarke Chace (1931–2004), who was one of America’s leading foreign policy thinkers and historians. At the time of his death, Chace held the position of the Paul W. Williams Professor of Government and Public Law and Administration and was director of the BGIA Program at Bard College. The Bard Globalization and International Affairs Program offers students in their third or fourth year of college a unique opportunity to live in Manhattan and study with eminent scholars, journalists, and leading figures in the field of foreign relations.
