BARD SUMMERSCAPE’S ONE-OF-A-KIND SPIEGELPALAIS EXTENDED TO AUGUST 20TH

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Due to popular demand, the run for Bard’s SpiegelPalais has been extended for an additional three weeks and will remain on site and open at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College through August 20, 2006. Originally programmed for five weeks of cabaret, family events, and informal dining for SummerScape audiences from June 29–July 30, the SpiegelPalais will continue to present a variety of events and offer dining services for audiences for the duration of the Bard SummerScape Festival. Bard’s SpiegelPalais is one of the few remaining Spiegeltents owned and operated for generations by the Klessen family in Belgium (www.spiegeltent.be). These exquisite rotundas are made of carved wood, canvas, and glass, with ornate interiors that feature a shining parquet dance floor, beveled mirrors, stained-glass windows, and ballooning velvet canopies. In their heyday, Spiegeltents toured the lowlands of Europe as traveling dance halls, wine-tasting marquees, and cabaret venues. These famed “palaces of mirrors” were named for the myriad glittering mirrors that surround the interior. The mirror tents became the domain of night owls and a symbol of the wild fin-de-siècle period in France and Belgium. Both Marlene Dietrich and Josephine Baker made their debuts in Spiegeltents. The fourth annual SummerScape Festival at Bard College opened on Thursday, June 29, 2006, and will run for nearly eight weeks, closing with the 17th season of the acclaimed Bard Music Festival. SummerScape once again brings a diverse performing arts season featuring talent from around the world to its scenic Hudson Valley campus, with Bard's visually and acoustically stunning Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts serving as center stage. Among the Festival's highlights are Bard Music Festival, presenting two full weekends of concerts and special events focusing on “Franz Liszt and His World,” and two new opera productions, Robert Schumann’s Genoveva and a trio of comic operettas by Jacques Offenbach. Audiences attending the Bard Music Festival, featuring the American Symphony Orchestra in residence, will enjoy informal musical events presented in the SpiegelPalais alongside the Bard Music Festival program, which includes concerts, panel discussions, symposia, and preconcert talks focusing on the musical world of master composer Franz Liszt: his artistic, social, and historical context; his circle, those who influenced him and those he influenced, and the politics and culture of his time. # SpiegelPalais Schedule: (subject to change) Dining, Thursday – Sunday, 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm Dining will continue in the SpiegelPalais and SpiegelGarden from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm, Thursday through Sunday.
