Conjunctions Celebrates 25 Years of Publishing the Best in Innovative Contemporary Writing

Conjunctions:47, Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Issue, includes new work from Will Self, Jonathan Lethem, Jessica Hagedorn, William H. Gass, Valerie Martin, John Barth, Edmund White, Joyce Carol Oates, Howard Norman, John Ashbery, Jim Crace, Joanna Scott, Jonathan Carroll, Lydia Davis, and Rick Moody, among many others ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.–In 1981, Ronald Reagan was inaugurated the 40th president of the United States, MTV went on the air, and the highest-grossing film was Raiders of the Lost Ark. Bob Marley and Nelson Algren died. Britney Spears and Paris Hilton were born. Lech Walesa was Time’s Man of the Year. Pope John Paul II was shot. Sandra Day O’Connor became the first female justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, Columbia became the first space shuttle to orbit the Earth, and Conjunctions—the literary magazine published by Bard College—printed its first issue. In the 25 years that have followed, Conjunctions has taken its place at the vanguard of innovative fiction and poetry, featuring new work from the world’s leading contemporary writers and tackling a wide range of genres and themes. To mark Conjunctions’ 25th anniversary, Brown University held a three-day literary celebration in October, featuring two dozen writers; New York University is hosting a celebratory reading in December; and Bard has now published Conjunctions:47, Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Issue, a collection of more than 450 pages of new work from many of the magazine’s longtime contributors, as well as some new voices. “Literature has always been, for me, the most profound way to ask and try to answer our most difficult questions,” writes Bradford Morrow, Conjunctions editor, novelist, and Bard literature professor. “Nearly a thousand writers in Conjunctions—which I continue to think of as a living notebook—have explored the human experience, and many thousands of readers have traveled with them. I, for one, have been deeply grateful to be on the journey.” -continued- Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Issue features new work from Jonathan Lethem, Ann Lauterbach, Jim Crace, Peter Gizzi, Joanna Scott, Valerie Martin, Robert Antoni, Lydia Davis, Robert Kelly, Howard Norman, Edie Meidav, Clark Coolidge, Marcella Durand, C.
