Yana Lahoda ’27 Covered in the Daily Catch for Developing a Course for Students in Kyiv
Bard’s signature Language and Thinking Program (L&T) is a prerequisite for all first-year students to become acquainted with the liberal arts and sciences. Fourth-year student Yana Lahoda ’27 exported this methodology to her native Ukraine, where she kickstarted a summer writing workshop for 30 teenagers in Kyiv. The course marked the first time many of the participants had attended a school in person since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Lahoda hopes to build off the extraordinary success of the inaugural L&T Kyiv, and has the ambition to eventually establish it as a Bard Early College, another of the college’s signature programs, which provides college credit to high school students. “I see this initiative as part of Ukraine’s long-term reconstruction,” Lahoda told the Daily Catch. “We have to build institutions that give young people a reason to see their future in Ukraine and to believe that their future can be part of the country’s development.”
