Arts and Society in Berlin

Spend a semester or a year exploring the world’s most exciting experimental space--the city of Berlin--where the arts collide head on with history and politics. With its conflicted past, central role in European and global economics and politics, and openness to artists and intellectuals, Berlin is a vibrant international city where experimentation in art and social policy are embraced.

LAB: Liberal Arts Berlin

Berlin has staged some of the most profound upheavals and transformations of the modern world. Bard College Berlin gives you the city as a lens and a laboratory for engaging with the historical development and contemporary perplexities of Western modernity. Liberal Arts Berlin (LAB) aims to contextualize rigorous academic studies within Berlin’s significant contributions to social thought and politics.

From Ali's Statement of Grant Purpose:

A few months into my semester abroad I realized that it is normal to expect customers to pay for their coffee upon their departure rather than when they order it. Once the weather became nice enough, I saw blankets on outdoor seating at every restaurant, a gesture that I had never witnessed in the United States. Once compiled, each of these differences contribute to what constitutes a culture. Few people are fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to make their way into another nation’s culture, to learn from it and to become a more aware person because of it.
