Founding editor, Chelsea Review, Trobar, Matter. Contributing editor, Caterpillar, Sulfur, Alcheringa: Ethnopoetics, and Conjunctions. Major poetry books include The Common Shore, The Loom, Kill the Messenger, Not This Island Music, The Flowers of Unceasing Coincidence, A Strange Market, Red Actions, The Time of Voice, The Garden of Distances, Lapis, Runes, Threads, May Day. Fiction: A Transparent Tree, Doctor of Silence, Cat Scratch Fever, The Queen of Terrors, The Book from the Sky. Founding Director, Writing Program, Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts (1980–93).
