Bard College offers the Master of Arts in Teaching degree in five distinct locations, allowing students to become certified and to gain experience in both rural and urban high-needs school districts. In each of these locations the M.A.T. strives to model change in public education through partnerships with graduate faculty and students, mentor teachers, and unique charter schools.
Bard MAT students carry out their studies on the Bard campus and engage in field experiences in nearby schools in the Hudson Valley, working with experienced teachers who are active members of the MAT educational community.
After a summer of graduate coursework on Bard's main campus in Annandale-on-Hudson, MAT students who plan to teach in New York City will complete their remaining program course requirements at the New York City campus and satisfy their field experience requirements in partner schools in New York City.
The California MAT Program is located at the Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA) campus, a community based organization serving local youth for the past 25 years, and Larchmont Charter School, a highly successful public school serving middle and high school students on its campus just minutes from HOLA.
In a joint effort with Al-Quds University, the MAT program offers a new model of teacher training in Palestine, integrating graduate-level study in an academic discipline and key areas in education with ongoing work as a teacher or apprentice in a classroom setting.
