Looking at some photographs of war from his book of poems Sevastopol, Allen will consider the role of art, ekphrasis and bearing witness, sensationalism, revolutionary spirit and 'the decisive moment'. Can art or culture change the world? How do we communicate about a moment or a movement lost in history? Where is the poetry in a photograph? These photographs tell the history of war through well-known and unknown photographers, the personal, the poignant, the forgotten, the unseen.
