The Art of Archival Practice with Julia Weist
Inaugural event for The Uses of History initiative.
Monday, October 19, 2026
Charles P. Stevenson Jr. Library
5:00 pm – 7:00 pm EDT/GMT-4
In this presentation, visual artist Julia Weist will discuss her research-based practice and how it dovetails with her teaching in Bard's undergraduate Studio Art program. Weist has used archival material to illuminate the complexities of governance, institutional power, surveillance and censorship. Her works, which often take the form of richly-layered photographic collages, are frequently collected or presented by the same civic and cultural archives that serve as Weist's subjects. This collapse of the boundary between research and production is a hallmark of Weist's work as well as of the courses she teaches, such as Archives as Material.5:00 pm – 7:00 pm EDT/GMT-4
THE USES OF HISTORY is a three year interdisciplinary initiative on the Annandale campus. Focused on archives, archaeology, and methods, the project works to develop and implement a sustainable humanities curriculum for the undergraduate experience.
JULIA WEIST is a visual artist based in New York. Her work has been exhibited extensively and she's the recipient of numerous awards, fellowships and residencies including from MacDowell, Yaddo, Millay, the Shed, the Jerome and Camargo Foundations and the Foundation for Contemporary Art.
