How does sound cross the heavily militarized Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), blurring boundaries between human and machine, presence and absence, and friend and enemy? This talk explores the DMZ as a technologically mediated soundscape where political ideologies, militarized masculinities, and national identities are projected and contested. Focusing on sonic encounters such as K-pop broadcasts, it examines how sound and technology shape human experiences across one of the world's most fortified borders.5:30 pm EST/GMT-5
Joowon Park is Chair and Associate Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Asian Studies Program at Skidmore College. He is the author of Belonging in a House Divided (University of California Press) and is currently working on K-pop in the DMZ and Other Transborder Crossings, a book exploring cultural and political exchanges across the Korean border.
