Symmetry is one of the central organizing principles of theoretical physics. It gives rise to conservation laws, underpins the Standard Model, and characterizes phases of matter. In quantum systems, symmetry can do something even more surprising: it can place powerful constraints on patterns of quantum entanglement and on emergent low-energy phenomena. In this talk, we will explore this unexpected power of symmetry and its consequences for quantum matter and quantum field theory.12:00 pm EDT/GMT-4
