ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The seventh annual Concerto Competition, presented by The Bard College Conservatory of Music, took place at Bard College with a preliminary round on Saturday, November 19, and a final round on Sunday, November 20. The eight finalists performed in the Sosnoff Theater of the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, competing for the opportunity to perform with the Bard College Conservatory Orchestra and the American Symphony Orchestra.

Winners of the 2011 competition are Peter Blaga, tuba; David Nagy, bassoon; and Renata Rakova, clarinet, all of whom will perform during the 2011–12 season as soloists with the American Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leon Botstein. Concerto Competition winner Lin Wang, viola, will perform with the Bard College Conservatory Orchestra during the 2011–12 season.

Each year, more than 20 musicians from the Conservatory and the Graduate Vocal Arts Program participate in the competition. This year’s judges included Julia Lichten, cellist and faculty member of the Manhattan School of Music and the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College, and a member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra since 1995; Diva Goodfriend-Koven, flutist, associate musician with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra the New York Philharmonic, and a member of the American Symphony Orchestra; Robert McDonald, pianist, faculty member of both The Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music and director of the keyboard program of the Taos School of Music and Chamber Music Festival in New Mexico; and Leon Botstein, music director and principal conductor of the Bard College Conservatory Orchestra, as well as music director and principal conductor of the American Symphony Orchestra. Botstein is the president of Bard College.
