Bard Professor Judy Pfaff Elected into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Judy Pfaff, renowned artist, Richard B. Fisher Professor in the Arts, and codirector of the Studio Arts Program at Bard College, has been elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Pfaff is among some of the world’s most accomplished leaders from academia, business, public affairs, the humanities, and the arts who have been elected as the Academy’s 2013 class of members. The new class will be inducted at a ceremony on October 12, 2013, at the Academy’s headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

“Election to the Academy honors individual accomplishment and calls upon members to serve the public good,” said Academy President Leslie C. Berlowitz. “We look forward to drawing on the knowledge and expertise of these distinguished men and women to advance solutions to the pressing policy challenges of the day.”

Judy Pfaff was born in London, England, in 1946. She received a B.F.A. from Washington University, St. Louis (1971), and an M.F.A. from Yale University (1973). She is the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship (2004), Guggenheim Fellowship (1983), and two National Endowment for the Arts grants (1979, 1986). She is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She has had numerous solo exhibitions and group shows in major galleries and museums in the United States and abroad. Commissions include Pennsylvania Convention Center Public Arts Projects, Philadelphia; large-scale site-specific sculpture, GTE Corporation, Irving, Texas; installation: vernacular abstraction, Wacoal Art Center, Tokyo, Japan; and set design, Brooklyn Academy of Music. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, and Detroit Institute of Arts, among others.
