2025 Enrichment Programs

Bard College enrichment programs offer high school students the opportunity to explore different areas of study and learn about different disciplines while traveling with Bard instructors and seeing the world through multiple academic lenses.

The student-instructor ratio for these programs is 6:1, so each student gets maximum direct attention and supervision from the instructor. Pastoral care and program coordinators who speak Chinese are also present on site to support students.

The Bard community grows and flourishes with you. The Bard community is international, and we love to see our students become true global citizens. Global Citizenship starts here.

2025 Enrichment Programs

  • Current 9th, 10th, or 11th grade high school students are eligible to apply.
  • Eligible students for this program are those whose academic years end in November or December, who are currently in their final year of high school, and who will not have graduated by Summer 2025. Students applying from this context should select “11th grade” as their "Current Level of Education" on the application.
  • Students must be at least 14 years old.
  • No language proficiency tests are required to apply for these programs.

Bard College (Beijing Office) offers a range of summer and winter programs for high school students who want to gain new skills and experience, learn from international faculty, and develop their academic projects and interests. Past participants view these programs as a crucial stepping stone to their study abroad journey and as the "experience of a lifetime." The Bard Xiamen Film and Media Program is an intensive exploration into the art and craft of visual storytelling. Set in the picturesque city of Xiamen, this program combines technical training, creative exercises, and cultural immersion to guide students through the fundamentals of non-fiction film production. Participants will learn to develop compelling narratives, capture authentic footage, and edit dynamic short films. The program emphasizes hands-on practice, encouraging students to work collaboratively while also exploring their artistic voices.

Throughout the 10 days, students will engage with a variety of topics, including the basics of cinematography, sound design, and editing techniques, while participating in discussions on ethics in documentary film making and storytelling for impact. The course is ideal for aspiring filmmakers, media enthusiasts, and students interested in exploring creative careers in the arts.

Student projects include:
A group-produced short documentary on a local Xiamen story.
An individual visual storytelling portfolio, including stills and video snippets.
A presentation on the role of media in contemporary society, drawing from their own projects and research.

Course Notes:
Upon successful completion of this program, participants will receive a certificate from Bard, along with a digital portfolio showcasing their work. Students will also have the opportunity to request personalized recommendation letters for future academic or professional applications.

This program is an immersive journey into the heart of Huangshan’s nature reserve where students will work alongside forest rangers to gain a practical understanding of forest management. This program is crafted to offer a blend of academic rigor and hands-on experience, ensuring that students gain a deep understanding of forest ecosystems, the vital role of rangers in community engagement, biodiversity conservation and the impact of technology in conservation.

Set against the backdrop of the majestic Huangshan mountain range, the program schedule is designed to adhere strictly to timings, with flexibility built in to accommodate weather conditions. Ideal for students interested in biology, geography, environmental science, community engagement, international studies, and NGO work and research.

Student projects include:
1. Solving and Contributing to furthering a Community Engagement Case Study 
2. An individual mini-research report on a topic related to biology, the environment, or NGO work;
3. A group project (written and design-based) focused on the conservation and development of nature reserves.

Course notes:
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive a certificate from Bard, and one volunteering certificate (60 hours) from the NGO that supports the conservation of the forests. Additionally, students can request recommendation letters.

This intensive summer program, organized by Bard College at the American University of Central Asia (AUCA) in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (a 6-hour direct flight from Beijing), offers a unique opportunity for high school students to explore the fascinating world of biodiversity conservation in the breathtaking landscapes of Kyrgyzstan.

Participants journey through diverse ecosystems, from high mountain pastures to pristine lakes and ancient Silk Road cities, while gaining hands-on experience in environmental science fieldwork, research, and community engagement. This program led by experts and instructors who specialize in Environmental Studies provides a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of environment, culture, and sustainable development in a region of critical importance.

Student projects include:
1. Data collection and analysis using simple statistical tools for assessing environmental impact
2. An individual mini-research report on a topic of their choice related to traditional ecological knowledge, biology, biodiversity etc.
3. A comparative study group project focused on biodiversity conservation

Course notes:
The program includes lectures, field trips, workshops, and cultural activities. Students will interact with expert faculty from Bard and AUCA, university students, local communities, and environmental professionals. Outdoor activities and cultural immersion experiences are integrated throughout the program. The program begins and ends in Bishkek, with some excursions and stays in nearby towns and cities.

Students will gain hands-on experience in environmental conservation while exploring the unique cultural fabric of this remote yet dynamic region.

Participants will engage with local communities, learn about traditional knowledge systems, and learn about sustainable practices in the context of rapid modernization and climate change. Ideal for students interested in anthropology, environmental science, sociology, and international development, this program emphasizes collaboration, cultural sensitivity, and critical thinking.

Student projects include:
A fieldwork-based case study analyzing a specific cultural or environmental challenge in the region
An academic essay and presentation on the topic of the participant’s choice related to the themes covered during the program 

Course Notes:
Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a certificate. Students will also have the option to request personalized recommendation letters for academic or career purposes. Well-written essays will get guidance from the instructors to be published in journals, magazines or websites.

The Bard Music Production Program immerses students in the art and science of music creation. Designed for aspiring musicians, producers, and audio engineers, this program provides hands-on training in modern music production techniques. Participants will collaborate with others and learn how to use professional software and hardware to compose, record, edit, and mix tracks inside of a music studio.

This program blends technical instruction with creative exploration of different genres of music. Students will work collaboratively on projects, honing their skills in sound design, beat-making, and storytelling through music. Ideal for those passionate about music, sound engineering, and digital creativity, this program encourages students to express their unique artistic vision while mastering industry-standard tools and workflows.

Student projects include:
Creating an original music track using professional production tools.
Collaborating with peers on a mixed-genre group project.

Program Details

  • All the above-mentioned programs are residential; there is no hybrid or remote option. We provide housing for all students. 
  • All programs vary in duration and are offered on a non-credit basis. 
  • Please check the header in each program's application form for details on fee structure. Program fees vary, but they always include tuition, educational materials, accommodation, meals, travel, insurance, and activities. Airfare and personal expenses are not included.
  • Once a student’s application is accepted and notified, program fees must be submitted to the Bard Beijing office 巴德亚太教育咨询(北京)有限公司 within 10 days to confirm participation. Participants can get a Chinese invoice (活动费 or 服务费) for the payments.

Program Details

Full Refund: If a participant withdraws their enrollment before April 30, 2025.
Partial Refund: For any participant withdrawals between April 30 and May 30, 2025, a percentage (85 %) of the fees will be refunded. If a participant cancels in June 2025, a percentage of the program fee (50%) will be refunded, with the rest retained to cover administrative costs.
No Refund: If a participant cancels within 14 days of the program start date or after the program begins, no refund will be provided.

How to Apply

All programs require students to submit their application by filling out the online application form. For any queries regarding your application, please scan the QR code at the bottom of the page to add our WeChat Service account (ID: Bard_Education) for assistance in Chinese & English. 

The deadlines are: Priority (February 28, 2025), and Regular (April 15, 2025). All applications will be processed and accepted on a rolling basis.
