Check with the study abroad office at your home institution as to which financial aid and institutional grants you will be able to use toward participation in your chosen study abroad program. Under certain circumstances you may also qualify for additional financial aid, so it is also important to talk to your financial aid adviser.

Scholarships for Bard Abroad Programs

Bard Abroad programs currently include the following: Bard in Berlin, Bard-CEU Study Abroad Program, AUCA-Bard Study Abroad Program, Berlin Theater Intensive, and Russian Summer Language Program.

Bard Abroad offers scholarships for non-Bard students who attend semester, academic year, and/or summer Bard Abroad programs. Students should consult with their home institution’s Office of Financial Aid to determine the exact terms and conditions of their aid package as applicable to study abroad when applying for scholarships.

For Bard students participating in a Bard Abroad program, Bard financial assistance transfers for the semester and academic year programs. Bard students may only apply for Bard Abroad scholarships for summer Bard Abroad programs.

Students with tuition remission and tuition remission exchange packages should consult with their home institution’s Office of Financial Aid and the IILE at Bard College regarding the terms and conditions of their packages as applicable to study abroad. These packages do not automatically transfer to study abroad opportunities.

Bard Abroad Scholarship

Bard Abroad scholarships are available to any student applying for a Bard Abroad program demonstrating financial need. Applications are particularly encouraged from students whose tuition at their home institution is significantly lower than Bard’s tuition rate, and/or for whom financial aid and/or institutional scholarships cannot be transferred toward participation in the program. Application is part of program application process for Bard Abroad programs.

Note: Bard students may only apply for Bard Abroad scholarships for summer Bard Abroad programs.

IILE Bridge Scholarship for Bard College Students

The Institute for International Liberal Education (IILE) at Bard College has established the IILE Bridge Scholarship to assist in identifying and overcoming some of the common financial obstacles Bard College students face to study away from the Annandale campus. Via IILE Bridge, Bard College students may apply for assistance with peripheral costs of study away as well as limited assistance for meeting program costs related to housing and meals during an approved semester/year study away program or short term program.

IILE Bridge Scholarship for Bard College Students

IILE BRIDGE SCHOLARSHIP

The Institute for International Liberal Education (IILE) at Bard College has established the IILE Bridge Scholarship to assist in identifying and overcoming some of the common financial obstacles students face to study away from the Annandale campus. Via IILE Bridge, Bard College students may apply for assistance with peripheral costs of study away (such as passport, travel health insurance, flights) as well as limited assistance for meeting program costs related to housing and meals during an approved semester/year study away program or short term program. These scholarships may be combined with Gilman Scholarships, program- or region-specific scholarships, and/or other sources of financial support to help put an international study experience (including BGIA and BELL) within reach for all Bard undergraduates. 

ELIGIBILITY 
  • Must receive financial aid from Bard
  • Must have up-to-date FAFSA or International Aid form on file
  • Must be in good academic and financial standing at the college before any award will be disbursed
  • Must be accepted or applying to an approved study away program 
  • For semester-long programs abroad, must have met with Study Abroad Adviser Trish Fleming and have submitted and received approval for Petition for Study Abroad before any award will be disbursed
  • For BGIA, must have been approved for study away by Dean of Studies office, applied for BGIA, and been accepted 
  • For non-Bard programs, must have applied for any/all scholarships available from the study abroad program provider (and learned the outcome of that scholarship application) 
APPLICATION/AWARD PROCESS

Please answer the questions below to submit your application. Each scholarship request is reviewed by relevant offices/departments/individuals to confirm the applicant’s eligibility and study away plans.

Non-Bard Scholarships

Boren Scholarships
Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, central and eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Application is made directly through the organization’s website.

US-Japan Bridging Project
The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations, through donations to the nonprofit US-Japan Bridging Foundation, makes it possible to award about 100 scholarships each year to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year. Applications are accepted twice a year for Bridging Scholarships.

CIEE Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship
CIEE's Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship honors the legacy of the abolitionist and statesman with a fully-funded summer study abroad program. This Fellowship is developed for students of color and selection is in the spirit of Douglass himself with special emphasis on leadership, social justice, agitation for positive change, and cross-cultural understanding. The fifth cohort of Fellows will be based in Dublin and follow in Douglass’s footsteps with visits across the country in summer 2021.

Diversity Abroad
Diversity Abroad offers ten $500 scholarships for full-time undergraduate students studying abroad during the spring or fall semesters (five scholarships are awarded for each semester). Economically disadvantaged students, African American, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, multiracial/ethnic or Native American undergraduate students, as well as students who study in nontraditional locations (outside western Europe and Australia) are strongly encouraged to apply. Application is made directly through the organization’s website.

Freeman-ASIA Scholarships
Open to students who receive need-based financial aid or demonstrate a verifiable need for financial assistance who are studying abroad and pursuing language study in any of the following countries: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Fund for Education Abroad
The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) invites applications from undergraduate students for FEA Scholarships. Scholarships (up to $5,000) are intended to support students planning to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs of four weeks or longer. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled as undergraduates in U.S. universities/colleges who plan to study abroad. Funding preference may be given for students from underrepresented groups attending a program with a strong service-learning or volunteering component in a nontraditional destination. Application is made directly through the organization’s website.

Fulbright Scholarships
The study/research grant category includes projects in both academic and arts fields. Study/research grants are available in approximately 140 countries. Applicants for these grants design their own projects and will typically work with advisers at foreign universities or other institutes of higher education. Program requirements vary by country, so the applicant’s first step is to familiarize himself or herself with the program summary for the host country. Application is made directly through the organization’s website.

Gilman Scholarships
The Gilman Scholarship Program supports undergraduate Pell Grant recipients studying abroad for summer, semester, or academic year programs. Over 2,300 scholarships of up to $5,000 are typically awarded each academic year. Award amounts vary depending on the length of study and student need, with the average award being approximately $4,000. Application is made directly through the organization’s website.

Golden Key Study Abroad Scholarships
Undergraduate members of the Golden Key Honor Society who are currently enrolled in a study abroad program or who will be enrolled the academic year immediately following the granting of the award are eligible for one of ten $1,000 awards presented each year. Application is made directly through the organization’s website.

HI USA Explore the World Travel Scholarship
The Explore the World scholarship provides the recipient with $2,000 to support a trip abroad that includes an educational, volunteer or service learning component. Applicants must reside or attend school in one of the select metropolitan areas where HI USA has a community presence: Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, Washington DC, Chicago, New Orleans, Boston, Minneapolis, New York City, Portland, Austin, Houston, and Richmond. 

Hispanic Scholarship Fund
The HSF Scholarship is designed to assist students of Hispanic heritage obtain a university degree. Scholarships are available, on a competitive basis, to: high school seniors, undergraduate students (all years), community college students transferring to four year universities and graduate students. Awards are based on merit; amounts range from $500 to $5,000, based on relative need, among the Scholars selected.

Institute of International Education Scholarship Directory
This directory features detailed descriptions of hundreds of study abroad scholarships, fellowships, grants, and paid internships for U.S. undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students, and professionals. Application is made through individual websites.

International Scholarship Search
The International Scholarship Search has a comprehensive listing of grants, scholarships, loan programs, and other information to assist college and university students in their pursuit to study abroad. Application is made directly through individual websites.

League of United Latin American Citizens Scholarships
As part of LULAC’s education efforts, the LULAC National Scholarship Fund (LNSF) was established in 1975 to provide scholarships to Hispanic students attending colleges and universities. Under the LNSF program, local LULAC Councils, in partnership with local and national businesses, award scholarships to students in their communities. LNSF is administered by the LULAC National Educational Service Centers, Inc., a non-profit educational organization established by LULAC to provide educational programs for Hispanics and other youth.

Masa Israel Journey Grants & Scholarships
Masa Israel Journey provides international experiences in Israel for young people ages 18-30, and also awards grants to Jewish students to study in Israel. Application is made directly through the organization’s website.

NAACP Scholarships
Each year the NAACP, through generous donations, is able to provide scholarships to outstanding students.  It is the duty of our dedicated Scholarship Committee to determine the most outstanding individuals to receive these awards.  The NAACP does not provide financial aid to individuals, only scholarships through this process.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants
Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Forty-five $1,000 grants are awarded each year. Open to all applicants with a Phi Kappa Phi chapter at their school; membership in Phi Kappa Phi is not required. Application is made directly through the organization’s website. 

Rainbow Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to deserving LGBTQI students who aims to participate in a high-quality, rigorous education abroad program. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a college or university in the U.S. Study abroad programs must be at least 4 weeks (28 days) in length to receive an FEA scholarship.

Rotary Scholarships
The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarship is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. Scholars studying abroad serve as ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country and give presentations about their homelands, studies, and projects. Upon returning home, they share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to greater understanding of their host countries. Application is made directly through your local Rotary Club.

Shawn Carter Foundation Scholarship
The Shawn Carter Foundation Scholarship was founded on the belief that any desiring individual in need should have the opportunity to further his or her education. This website also has a scholarship resource list. Application is made directly through the organization’s website.

The Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship
The Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to undergraduates/graduate students for a semester or year-long study abroad program of their choice in Japan (up to the full cost of attendance). Students must be US citizens and demonstrate financial need.

U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship Program
A program of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program offers fully funded intensive summer language institutes in 13 critical foreign languages. The selection process is administered by American Councils for International Education with awards approved by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The CLS Program is administered by American Councils and the Ohio State University / Ohio University.
