CEP Student Jeremy Cherson, MS '15 Shares His Riverkeeper Fellowship Experience

Originally posted on: Riverkeeper.org by Jeremy Cherson
Riverkeeper is proud to announce our partnership with the Bard Center for Environmental Policy through which one incoming student is awarded the Riverkeeper Scholarship. The Riverkeeper Scholar will receive a scholarship for 30 percent of their tuition for two years of full-time enrollment towards a Master of Science in Environmental Policy or Climate Science and Policy. In addition to financial support, the Riverkeeper Scholar will receive:

• a designated mentor from Riverkeeper who will meet twice yearly
• priority selection for internship opportunities and thesis work at Riverkeeper

As a current second-year Bard CEP student serving my internship with Riverkeeper, I can attest to the effectiveness of both organizations. Through a rigorous interdisciplinary program combining science, economics, law and policy, the Bard CEP prepares students for successful careers throughout the environmental field. As a core component of the Bard CEP curriculum, second-year students spend four to six months in the field at high-level graduate internships. Current students have internships in places as diverse as Bangkok, through the United Nations Environmental Programme; Lake Tahoe, with Keep Tahoe Blue; Tibet, with the China Exploration and Research Society, and others. Read blogs from the field.

My Internship With Riverkeeper
As for me, I am serving as the Volunteer and Outreach Fellow with Riverkeeper in New York’s Hudson Valley. Riverkeeper, nationally recognized for its work protecting the Hudson River, exemplifies the interdisciplinary approach taught to Bard CEP students. As a fellow I am helping expand and strengthen our grassroots capacity throughout New York City and the Hudson Valley through volunteer recruitment, trainings and partnerships. Volunteers are an integral part of Riverkeeper’s work. In 2014, volunteers have donated 10,963 hours of service, removed over 31 tons of trash from the river, gathered thousands of petition signatures, and signed up hundreds of new members.

I highly encourage you to apply to become a Bard CEP Riverkeeper Scholar or share information about this opportunity with friends, colleagues and family. Within your application please select “Riverkeeper Scholar” and include your interest and/or experience with: advocacy, water policy, water ecology, or the Hudson River estuary.
