The bookstore stocks books and supplies required for course work and a wide selection of general books, college supplies, and imprinted merchandise. It will also special order any book that is not in stock but is in print. Buy your textbooks as soon as your class schedule is final. Most books are in stock by the start of L&T in the fall and mid January in the spring, depending on the timing of the faculty order.  On average, books and supplies for undergraduate programs cost between $500 and $600 per semester (less if you buy used books). You should not purchase books for any course you think you might drop, but the bookstore’s refund policy will protect you against schedule changes. Textbooks are ordered from requisitions submitted by the faculty. They are arranged by course number. Shelf tags indicate the course number for each book (and a section number when necessary), how many books are required for the course, and whether a book is required or recommended. Always check the instructor’s syllabus, as well as the shelf tag, to be sure that you purchase the right books. Textbook information is available on our website for all courses that we have received textbook orders on from faculty.

Whenever possible, the bookstore offers used books, selling for 75% of new book prices. The supply of used books is limited; the earlier you buy your books, the better your chances of finding used books. The bookstore accepts cash; money orders, traveler’s checks, and bank checks made out to Bard College Bookstore; Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. Your student identification card can function as a demand card. To use the card in this way, you must make an initial minimum payment of $50 at the Student Accounts Office, with additional deposits as necessary.   The funds are available per the Student Accounts office.

Personal checks are accepted as payment under the following conditions:

        1. It is your personal check or that of a parent or guardian.

        2. The check does not exceed the amount of your purchase.

        3. You present your valid student identification card.

        4. Your name and  address  are imprinted on the face of the check.

        5. There is a $20 charge for any checks returned by your bank.

The bookstore will cash personal checks for a maximum of $50 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and between 12:00 noon and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, when funds are available. There is a $2 fee per check for this service.
