• Pearlware Sherd (Cat. #496)

  Early 19th-century transfer printing decorates 74 of the 248 pearlware fragments at the R. Tillotson site.  Other pearlware sherds have older hand-painted designs on 54 pieces, while the rest are plain and could date between the 1770s and 1830s when this bluish tinted pottery was manufactured in England.

  Creamware pottery, known for its creamy tint, English-made in the 1760s through 1830s, became the least expensive imported tea-drinking and dining vessels. The map of ceramic distribution in the 1% sample excavation depicts a large cluster of creamware around the cellar hole.

  Factory-dipped earthenware fragment, buff paste with a white, blue, and black slip. This swirling style of decoration is characteristic of some pottery of the mid-19th century. A circular spall has chipped off the sherd.

  Button with four holes and a recessed center. This image shows the button's underside, with the center portion raised. Imagine who once might have worn this shirt button of brass. Was the person gardening on the site’s periphery or a passerby sometime in the early 1800s? The small button  was found between 10 and 20 cm (4 to 8 inches) below surface.

• Crucifix Pendant (Cat. #1148)

  Encrusted with soil, this silver crucifix came from a shovel test near the anthropogenic depression. Robert Tillotson's father, from the largely Catholic colony of Maryland, may have influenced one of the site's occupants to wear this tiny figure of Christ.

• Porcelain Sherd (Cat. #1392)

  Hand-painted with a blue design under its now dull glaze, this flat porcelain sherd may have been part of a floor or fireplace tile. It came to light from the test trench at the northeast corner of the cellar hole, but appears too fragmentary for dating.
