Diversity, equity, and inclusion are central
to a liberal arts education and critical to the well-being of a democratic culture. DEI collaborates with faculty, staff, and students on learning, teaching, student development, institutional functioning, and engagement in our community—local as well as global. The College also partners with several national organizations that support our efforts to ensure a diverse, equitable, and inclusive campus, including the Posse Foundation, the American Talent Initiative, and the National Center for Faculty Diversity and Development.

DEI provides direction and support to campus-wide diversity initiatives focused on the classroom experience, campus climate, training and recruitment, and community support. We work closely with other campus departments and organizations, including:

Excellence in Athletics

A Coalition to Support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Bard College Athletics

This coalition—composed of student-athletes, faculty, and staff—is charged with reviewing Bard’s Office of Athletics and Recreation in areas of accessibility as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion, taking into account existing policies, facilities, and student and staff experiences. As the coalition’s work progresses, the administration of the Department of Athletics and Recreation has undertaken the important work of creating a diversity strategic plan that includes goals for mandatory training for all student-athletes, increasing diversity in the coaching staff, increasing community engagement, and more diversity among student-athletes.

Special Initiatives

Brothers at Bard

Brothers at Bard (BAB) is actively changing the narrative for young men of color. Through comprehensive mentorship and leadership development, BAB taps into the unique potential of male collegians of color, promoting their ability to provide support and guidance to each other and their high school peers. Ultimately, BAB encourages male collegians of color to “pay it forward,” extending socio-emotional support and empowerment to their high school peers.

Brothers at Bard has several initiatives: They run a comprehensive mentorship program for approximately 20 students in grades 9–12 at Kingston High School in Kingston, New York every year, with visits to the Bard Campus, mentorship retreats, conferences, and group trips to Washington, DC. BAB provides social support for men of color on the Bard campus as they pursue their scholarly, extracurricular, and professional goals. This support continues after graduation, with BAB alumni gatherings and alumni leaders returning to campus to support current students. Brothers at Bard is active in the national conversation about educational opportunities and support for students with limited resources, and is currently laying the groundwork for a new scalable initiative to support young men of color through partnerships between colleges and public high schools.

Organizing for Undocumented Students’ Rights

OUSR is focused on helping students that are undocumented or dreamers by being a resource for them at Bard. We are interested in helping raise funds for these students, giving them a space to share their experiences, and also create awareness about this topic around campus. We also want to support the immigrant community in the Hudson Valley. OUSR was instrumental in changing the policies and language around the admission of undocumented students and the creation of the Bard Sanctuary Fund.

Race Monologues

In the spring of 2015, a group of students at Bard College convened with the purpose of finding a way to creatively engage in, sustain, and shape the dialogue on campus around identity, especially race. Disappointed with the way conversations around race and racism take place on campus, Race Monologues became a way for Bard students to express their thoughts and experiences on race, ethnicity, and identity within and outside of the Bard experience.

Race Monologues is a showcase of student written performances, whether it be poetry, written scenes, collaborative pieces, songs, and multimedia work that takes place at Bard College every semester. The purpose is to establish a creative platform for students to voice themselves, to engage with and challenge existing conversations around these issues.

Socioeconomics and the Lived Experience (SCALE)

The SCALE Project is a collaborative initiative between students, faculty, and staff that examines the role of socioeconomic status in the academic and personal lives of Bard College community members. The project believes that no members of the College should have their experiences dictated by socioeconomics, and we strive to create this reality. Together we revisit and revise existing bureaucratic and social practices and policies at the College to improve the state of equity across socioeconomic backgrounds.
