Bard High School Early College Baltimore

Position Title: Faculty in Literature (Full-Time, short-term) Leave-Replacement Position (Bard High School Early College Baltimore)

About the Bard Early Colleges

The Bard Early Colleges (BEC) are founded on the belief that, for many young people, college can and should start at an earlier age. Acting on this belief, Bard Early College enables students to begin serious college study in place of the traditional 11th and 12th grades, at no cost to students or families. The Bard Early Colleges offer a unique home for young people’s intellectual ambition: as both tuition-free, branch campuses of Bard College and public high schools, they award a high school diploma and a Bard College Associate in Arts degree (and 60 transferable credits) by the end of the 12th grade. Students are taught by Bard College faculty in undergraduate seminar classes, all deeply rooted in the liberal arts and sciences, in Bard College’s commitment to excellence in teaching, and in Bard’s mission as a private college in the public interest.

Now entering its third decade, the Bard Early College network enrolls over 3,300 young people in campuses in Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Hudson, New York; Newark, New Jersey; New Orleans, Louisiana; Cleveland, Ohio; Baltimore, Maryland; and Washington, D.C.

Position Objectives:

Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) Baltimore invites applications for a position in our Literature Department, starting in November or December 2025, which is meant to be a full-time, short-term leave replacement position.  While it is meant to be a short-term ( 7 to 8 months) position, the possibility of renewal does exist. The successful candidate should expect to teach two sections of 9th grade American Literature, and two college electives of the candidate's choosing in the Spring semester. In the Fall semester it will be two sections of 9th grade American Literature and two specific college electives entitled Mythological Literature.  The 9th grade course is in the high school program and the Mythology course is an elective college literature class.

Most electives (other than the mandatory ones described as Mythological Literature), will be in their area of expertise. Generally speaking, we are open to any academic specialty area in the Literature field. All BHSEC Baltimore faculty also participate actively in the life of the school, advising students, serving on committees, or sponsoring extracurricular activities.
