Manager of Public Humanities + Research

Bard Graduate Center (BGC) invites applications for a Manager of Public Humanities + Research. This is a full-time, on-site, one-year appointment, at our campus on West 86th Street in New York City.

Bard Graduate Center is a graduate research institute in New York City dedicated to the study of the cultural history of the material world and committed to the encyclopedic study of things, drawing on methodologies and approaches from art and design history, history of technology, philosophy, anthropology, and archaeology and cultural history. Our students gravitate to careers in museums, academia, the art world, and publishing. Our MA and PhD degree programs, gallery exhibitions, research initiatives, and public programs explore new ways of thinking about decorative arts, design history, and material culture.

Reporting to the Director of Public Humanities + Research, this Manager oversees the execution of all internal and public-facing research events, including public lectures, conversations, performances, lunchtime talks, symposia, in-gallery events, and research convenings. This role is responsible for both advanced planning and day-of events management, working with a team of student workers and independent contractors. This position also facilitates BGC fellowships and supports the training of student educators in the gallery and the BGC study collection.

This position is expected to work some evenings and weekends.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Event Production
    • project management, logistics, and event staff management
    • front-of-house and hospitality
    • archive video production
    • marketing materials prep
    • coordinate with facilities, security, visitor services, and tech staff
  • Administration
    • contracts (drafting of unique agreements for each guest, under the supervision of the Director)
    • invoice processing and credit card reconciliation
    • booking travel for outside guests
    • manage timesheets for student worker teams
    • monitor general department inboxes
  • Fellowships
    • manage fellowship application and review process
    • serve as primary point of contact for fellows (on-boarding, introductions, on-site support)
  • Educator Training
    • schedule working group meetings and individual work hours for gallery and study collection educators
    • coordinate with study collection, library, interpretation, and gallery staff
    • send bi-weekly instructions to student teams
    • provide feedback on educator programs
Desired Qualifications
  • Event production experience
  • Experience in project management, including expense tracking and contracting
  • Experience working in an academic and/or museum environment
  • Able to use consumer-grade media hardware and editing software
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse faculty, students, and gallery staff.
  • Commitment to advancing BGC’s stated goals for diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
  • Advanced degree in art history, material culture studies, or a related field
Candidates must be legally authorized to work full-time in the United States for any employer. Bard Graduate Center will not petition,
pay for, or take over an existing visa.

Salary and Benefits
Compensation: $66,500

This salary reflects the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for the position at the time of the job
posting. Salary decisions are dependent on several factors including but not limited to market and organizational considerations,
experience, and qualifications of a selected candidate as well as internal and external equity.
