Position Description
Bard High School Early College Queens -- a partnership of Bard College and the New York City Department of Education -- invites applications for a full-time permanent position in our Literature Department starting September, 2021. The academic program emphasizes small class size and a commitment to teaching a diverse student body in a liberal-arts environment. The faculty member will teach Latin in both our college and high school program, may also teach college electives in an area of expertise, as well as potentially teach in Bard’s signature interdisciplinary seminar courses in our early college program.
In our high school Latin program, students are introduced to the language with Oerberg’s Lingua Latina per se Illustrata series and gain reading fluency via comprehensible input strategies, supplemented with vocabulary acquisition and grammar exercises. These skills are further developed in the college program, where students complete LLPSI: Roma Aeterna in three semesters corresponding to the Roman historical periods: monarchy, republic, and empire. The fourth college semester focuses on a particular author or set of authors in prose or poetry, at the discretion of the instructor.
Qualifications
Ph.D. and college teaching experience, as well as some experience working with or interest in younger students, are desirable.
