Bard College

Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) - Film and Electronic Arts

Employer Website: http://apply.interfolio.com/136030
The Film and Electronic Arts Program at Bard College invites applications for a practicing filmmaker or media artist at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor. The job will begin September 2024. We seek candidates whose work centers on one or more of the following areas: documentary and nonfiction media; video activism; race and representation; sound art; expanded cinema; intermedial practice; digital and emerging modalities. We welcome applicants who aim to push film form and style in new and experimental directions. It is also important that they have a strong and active production and exhibition record, which may include showing work in galleries, museums, festivals, and arthouse theaters.

A commitment to teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts environment is a must. Classes will draw from the candidate’s expertise and will speak to the broad needs of our curriculum. Teaching will include foundational courses focusing on cinematography, sound design, editing, documentary, narrative fiction, and cross-platform cinema. These hands-on, seminar-style courses should be designed to integrate into a film program that embraces production, history, and theory as well as fit within a broader liberal arts curriculum. The candidate will also have the opportunity to teach introductory and upper-level seminars based on their own area of specialization and interest. Faculty in the program are encouraged to interweave critical studies fields into their production pedagogy; for example, critical race theory, disability studies, art history, the environmental humanities, film and cultural studies theory, gender and sexuality studies, indigenous studies, and media archaeology.

Mentoring and program development will also be an important aspect of this position. The successful applicant will advise students in the major, as well as supervise capstone projects. The Film and Electronic Arts program engages students in the study of motion pictures as an expansive field of art that combines creative practice with history and theory. Our curriculum aims to equip students with the technical and conceptual skills to make their own films as well as research and write about cinema and media. Faculty, students, and staff of Film and Electronic Arts affirm that diversity of experience and perspective enriches the creative practice of filmmaking, our program culture, and campus life. We encourage individuals from historically under-represented and marginalized communities to apply to this position. We also welcome candidates to reflect on their interest and past involvement with teaching a diverse student body.
