Bard High School Early College Washington, D.C.

Dean of Students

Position Objective: To coordinate and ensure the stability and quality of all aspects of Bard High School Early College DC’s (Bard DC) non-academic programming. Outside of the classroom, the Dean of Students will work to sustain and increase awareness of and investment in Bard DC’s programming on the part of students, parents, schools, and relevant agencies. The Dean of Students will work in concert with the Principal and the faculty team to ensure that students’ academic work is supported with appropriate resources and interventions.

Key Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the Dean of Students span all aspects of Bard DC’s organization beyond instruction and curriculum. Central among these are:
Student Supports 
  • Coordinate student services and academic supports (including After School Hours, study halls, and study spaces)
  • Remain up-to-date on all training related to early college and college student supports and parent engagement by attending conferences and development opportunities in those areas
  • Oversee internal grades and crite sheet collection process 
  • Maintain student handbook and relevant documents related to student data
Campus Culture Building 
  • Lead on all discipline issues through a restorative justice framework, facilitating restorative circles, and providing support to faculty in implementing restorative practices. 
  • Major event facilitation (including Fall Orientation, admitted students events, monthly gatherings, etc.) 
School Leadership / Parent Engagement/ Partner Relations
  • Collaborate with the Principal and Dean of Studies on BEC operations
  • Lead and coordinate parent engagement efforts (including grade sharing, responding to parent concerns, engaging parents in restorative conversations, and consulting on parent-instructor interactions)
  • Report as needed to administration of Bard College
  • Engage BHSEC visitors and evaluators on student and school culture matters
  • Manage relationships with high school liaisons and other education partners
Bard DC Admissions
  • Oversee and execute all aspects of the admissions process
  • Ensure enrollment numbers are aligned with goals from the Principal and the network
Job Type: Full-time 
Compensation:  Based on experience and following the guidelines provided here https://dcps.dc.gov/page/compensation 
Location: Bard High School Early College in Washington, D.C.
Start Date: July or August 2022
 
Preferred Qualifications:
The Dean of Students should be eager to create a supportive early college environment that honors students as whole people and works to address their needs in a holistic way. Commitment to the mission of the Bard Early Colleges is expected. The successful candidate will have: 
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • At least three years experience working directly with high school age students 
  • Some knowledge of the DC schools system
  • Interest in working with high school age students who are also completing a college-level course of study
  • We are seeking candidates with a strong commitment to equity and social justice and desire to open up opportunities for underrepresented students
  • Basic computer skills
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Access to transportation/driver's license
