Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
The Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will work to strengthen Bard College Berlin’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion by designing and implementing strategies to sustain welcoming environments across the College and to support historically marginalized individuals (whether on the basis of race, gender, religion, ethnic identity, ability, or any other protected category). Working with student groups will be a special priority. The Director will work collaboratively with the university leadership while reporting directly to the Associate Dean of the College and the Head of Student Life.Specific areas of competence and tasks will include:
Compliance and Policy Writing (30%)
● Working jointly with university leadership and the Head of Student Life on university concepts for diversity, equity and inclusion in general as well as a dedicated gender equity concept
● Completing an annual policy draft, reviewing/updating processes, keeping the university leadership up to date on legal requirements and changes
● Participating in reviews of new study programs and hiring processes to ensure accessibility
● Organizing and overseeing any legally mandated and voluntary trainings for the campus community
● Serving as feedback and counseling point of contact for faculty, staff and students on any issue related to DEI or gender equity
● Overseeing relevant grievance procedures for DEI or gender equity complaints or concerns
● Serving as the Gender Equity Coordinator, including administrative oversight and investigation of gender-based misconduct cases
● Regularly creating reports for the university leadership and relevant national and international institutions, including any necessary data collection with regard to disability accommodation, gender equity, and other forms of equity
Student Support (30%)
● Collaborating with students to address DEI-related issues and concerns
● Providing 1-on-1 and group support for underrepresented populations within the campus community
● Serving as point person for and responding to reports from students who feel they may have experienced discrimination from other students, faculty, staff, or community members
● Supporting the Deputy Gender Equity Coordinator and the Health and Wellness Officer (who oversees disability accommodations) in developing student orientations in relevant areas as well as creating and implementing student orientations in other areas
● Cultivating connections to resources outside BCB for students
Campus Programming and Outreach (20%)
● Coordinating an ongoing workshop, event series, and discussion platform for campus community to increase overall commitment to and discussion of DEI issues
● Developing programs that build support for diversity and create connections with the college in the neighborhood community
● Building relationships with local, national, and international organizations
Staff and Faculty Support (10%)
● Providing support for faculty engagement in diversity, equity and inclusion issues, including connections to faculty development opportunities
● Offering support for ways to nurture inclusive spaces in the office and classroom
● Designing and implementing trainings and workshops for faculty and staff on issues related to diversity, inclusion, equity, social justice, antiracism and anti-discrimination, including legally required training (e.g. Sexual Violence and Gender-Based Misconduct)
Communication (10%)
● Maintaining internal and external communications on the institutional level (e.g. website, newsletters, participation in conferences, etc.)
Qualifications
● MA in related field of study required; JD, EdD or PhD preferred
● At least 5 years of work experience in higher education institutions, DEI experience preferred
● Strong communication and organizational skills
● Experience with cross-cultural contexts and international student populations
● Familiarity with both the German and US higher educational contexts preferred
