Admission Counselor (Mid-Atlantic Regions)

The Office of Admission at Bard College seeks an Admission Counselor responsible for representing the college to multiple constituencies, including prospective students and their families and school/community contacts. This representative engages in recruiting initiatives and follow-up to meet application and enrollment goals, focusing on the Mid-Atlantic regions. This is a full-time, year-round, benefit-eligible position. This position reports directly to a member of the Senior Leadership Team but works closely with the entire admission team and other Bard offices as needed.

Travel Responsibilities
Fall recruitment takes place from September through November (sometimes starting in August) and spring recruitment takes place from March through May with occasional travel for fairs, trainings, and conferences during the summer months.
  • Participate in admission travel in regions as assigned to meet with prospective students and their families as well as high school college counselors
  • Travel for up to 20 weeks out of the year covering school visits, college fairs, prospective and admitted student events (sometimes coordinated with Alumni/ae Affairs and Development offices and other Bard College offices)
  • Represent Bard College through high/secondary school visits, college fairs, community college visits, counselor functions, alumni/ae receptions, and interaction with community-based organizations
Essential Responsibilities
  • Plan, develop, and implement outreach and recruitment activities to meet undergraduate enrollment goals considering enrollment history and other relevant data
  • Meet with and advise prospective students and their families about the college selection process and provide information about opportunities available to them at Bard
  • Plan, develop and implement admitted student events designed to support students and families through the enrollment process and answer questions about resources at Bard
  • Represent Bard College at networking events and conferences
  • Conduct interviews for prospective students
  • Manage recruitment-related correspondence (emails, letters, phone and zoom calls) with students from designated recruitment regions
  • Participate in office trainings
  • Use our CRM (Slate) to track and read applications and set up interviews and high schools and college fair events
  • Read applications as assigned (usually 400+ applications per year)
  • Serve on the admission committee, including committees shared by admission and other offices (ex. Athletics, Equity & Inclusion Programs, Conservatory, etc.)
  • Participate in on-campus programs such as Fall Open House, Immediate Decision Plan and Admitted Students Day
  • Respond to student, parent and counselor inquiries
  • Participation in at least one admission staff working group (ex. DEI, Documentation, International, Learning Lunches, Enrollment, Bard Entrance Exam, Party Planning etc.)
Other Responsibilities As Assigned:
  • Coordinate events with Alumni/ae Affairs, Development and Bard College Berlin when appropriate
  • Support emerging work around Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) student recruitment and retention (especially relating to the BHSECs in Newark, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.).
  • Assist members of the senior leadership team on special projects and tasks as assigned
  • Occasional support in the office including but not limited to taking and/or rerouting phone calls and completing tasks related to office organization
  • Plan and host information sessions for prospective students and their families and high school college counselors
  • Create, edit and proofread copy used for print and web materials as well as communications as assigned
  • Proofread and workshop decision letters for students as assigned
  • Support the development of new and existing admission events such as Fall open House, Immediate Decision Plan and Admitted Students Day 
Required Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-motivated with excellent organizational skills, time management skills, and ability to function independently
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Office Suite tools
  • Ability to lift packages and boxes of brochures for travel
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record
  • Ease in using and learning technology for communication (ex. Slate), record keeping, and management of data
  • Experience with travel or ability to organize trips, buy tickets, make hotel reservations, and coordinate travel plans
  • Ability to work some irregular hours and travel on occasional nights and weekends
  • Proficiency in Spanish is a plus
  • Interest in Diversity Equity and Inclusion work a plus
