Bard College at Simon's Rock

Production Manager

Bard Academy and Bard College at Simon’s Rock, located in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, seeks a full-time Production Manager for a year-round position. The Production Manager (PM) will be responsible for day-to-day oversight of the technical activities of the Daniel Arts Center. The PM will be the stage manager for the theater program productions as well as dance program concerts during the academic year and will be a key member of the staff supporting summer programs in the Daniel Arts Center facilities, including external organizations that rent facilities in the DAC. Overall, the PM works with the other members of the DAC production team to provide an excellent standard of production support for all activities taking place in or produced by the DAC, and to advance the mission of the College. The Production Manager reports to the Daniel Arts Center Director.

Essential Duties

Student Production Support
  • Provide Stage Manager services for academic productions and concerts;
  • Attend showings, rehearsals, and other production-related meetings as required;
  • Interface with guest production directors and designers, including communicating and tracking design milestones; developing and distributing production overviews;
  • Provide day-to-day management of all production calendars;
  • Oversee or participate in load-in, tech, running, strike, and restore in an active and hands-on manner;
  • Provide technical and managerial support to students during student project development and performances.
Building Oversight
  • Consult with Physical Plant and the DAC Director to identify and plan repairs for facility issues;
  • Maintain theater equipment including but not limited to: ETC dimming systems, Unison dimming, ETC lighting fixtures and assorted cables;
  • Participate in the development of production safety practices; ensure that safety practices are adhered to for all DAC activities.
Required Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater or related discipline
  • Experience in a multi-venue theater facility
  • Knowledge of all standard theater production systems such as lighting, scenery, costume and AV
  • CAD program knowledge a plus (Vectorworks preferred)
  • ETC training to help maintain equipment
  • Knowledge of single purchase fly systems
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel specifically)
  • The successful candidate will have strong organizational and time management skills, a strong sense of teamwork, and an ability to communicate effectively and courteously with a diverse community.
  • The Production Manager will be expected to take input from others, solve problems in a collaborative manner, and make decisions quickly without compromising the safety of people and equipment.
The position requires the physical ability and willingness to:
  • Lift at least 50 pounds
  • Climb to a height and use ladders and genie lifts
  • Work on the grids above the stages as well as the box booms in the house
Schedule requirements include:
  • This position is 40 hours per week, year-round
  • During the academic year there will be production duties that include evening and weekend hours for rehearsals and performances (generally require staffing 1½ hours before the performance and 1 hour after)
  • During the summer the schedule varies depending on the needs of summer programming and rentals but generally will be 40 hours per week
