Part-Time Security Guard

The Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College (CCS Bard) and the Hessel Museum of Art seek an experienced professional for the part-time/casual position of Security Officer. The successful candidate will be available to work weekends and occasional evenings.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the security and monitoring of the CCS Bard and Hessel Museum facility as directed by the Security and Facility Manager. The Security Officer will help create a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors, as well as ensure the security of exhibition and collection assets at the Hessel Museum and CCS Bard Galleries following standard museum practices.

The Hessel Museum of Art is a contemporary art museum that organizes and presents group exhibitions and thematic surveys, monographic presentations, traveling exhibitions, as well as student-curated shows that are free and open to the public. It is part of the Center for Curatorial Studies, a multifaceted institution at Bard College that also includes a graduate program in curatorial studies, a collection of more than 3,000 artworks, and an extensive library and archives. Together, these resources amount to one of the world’s most forward-thinking teaching and learning environments for contemporary curatorial practice and scholarship.

Responsibilities
  • Patrol and secure the museum, galleries, and other parts of the facility to ensure a safe environment
  • Facilitate and control access to key areas
  • Operate the security equipment, e.g., CCTV systems, and fire/security alarms, the communications system, and exhibition-related audio/visual and display equipment, among other items
  • Prepare and maintain accurate logs and written reports, as required
  • Provide crisis intervention and mediation in required situations
  • Provide assistance and information to students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the museum
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma required
  • Minimum of one year of security or hospitality experience, preferably in a museum setting
  • Must hold the NYS Security pre-assignment and be willing to obtain a NYS Security license
  • Must maintain a valid New York driver’s license
  • Position requires mental alertness, emotional stability, and physical fitness (including hearing and eyesight) to deal with any emergencies
  • Broadly accepting of and able to work with college students, staff, and faculty of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Punctual, dependable, and calm under pressure
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Professional with strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to use equipment such as a hand radio, computer, and telephone

Compensation: $18.54/hour; part-time, casual
This salary range reflects the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for the position at the time of the job posting. Salary decisions are dependent on several factors including but not limited to market and organizational considerations, experience, and qualifications of a selected candidate as well as internal and external equity.
