The Publications Office at Bard College is seeking a full-time editor/writer to research, edit, and write copy for some of the most visible documents put out by the College. The person is part of a team of editors and designers whose goal is to present the College in a positive light and disseminate materials that are accurate, informative, and readable.

The successful candidate is able to work simultaneously on multiple projects and is able to organize priorities. Excellent writing, proofreading, and communication skills are essential.

College documents put out by the Publications Office include myriad Commencement-related materials; brochures, viewbook, and other timely materials for the Admission Office; the twice-yearly Bardian magazine; posters and announcements of events, such as lectures and concerts, and their programs; essays about orchestral music, opera, theater, and dance for Bard SummerScape, the Bard Music Festival, and other occasions; and informational materials for branches of the extensive Bard network.

Requirements include familiarity with the latest editions of Chicago Manual of Style and Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, at least three years of editing experience, solid writing and fact-checking ability, broad general knowledge, attention to detail, willingness and ability to learn the College’s writing and editing style and complex institutional structure, grammatical proficiency, ability to work closely with graphic designers, and meet multiple deadlines. Knowledge of classical music and/or music editing experience is a plus.

This is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the Director of Publications. Please note that no vacation time is permitted during the month of May because of Commencement responsibilities.

Essential Duties
  • Work with clients throughout the College and with the director of publications on the goals, style, and parameters of various publication projects.
  • Develop an independent ability to find out information where and when needed for the project at hand.
  • Understand language and methodological usage according to the Bard College Style Guide so as to maintain consistency across projects.
  • Learn about and work with others in the Bard network, which ranges from the Center for Civic Engagement on campus to partner institutions in Berlin, elsewhere in the world, and throughout the United States.
  • Meet deadlines with copy that is clear, to the point, and appropriate to the individual project.
  • Must be able to work occasional weekends and evenings as needed.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word on a Mac is required.
  • Familiarity with the latest editions of Chicago Manual of Style and Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary
  • At least three years of editing experience
