Full-time Faculty - Core DivisionNow in its tenth year of operation, Al-Quds Bard College for Arts and Sciences (AQB) is an innovative program offering a liberal arts undergraduate education and Master of Arts in Teaching program in Palestine, with an enrollment of 350 students in 2018-19. AQB’s undergraduate program is rigorous, culminating in a two-semester independent senior project, which, in the social sciences, is generally a demanding research paper of 45 pages or more. Graduates of AQB receive dual degrees: a BA or a MAT from Al-Quds University and from Bard College (New York).
AQB has a full-time opening in the Core Division beginning in the fall 2019 semester, renewable contingent upon successful review and funding. Our teaching methods are student-centered, involving students in active discussion and group tasks to develop their reading, writing, speaking, production, and critical thinking skills in English. The candidate should be able to teach the First Year Seminar and English Composition; the ability to teach the Second Year Seminar would be an asset. Successful candidates will be flexible problem solvers capable of engaging texts and fields they are not specialists in. The chosen candidate must be prepared to teach students close reading, analytical, and writing skills and the ability to talk intelligently about texts. S/he must also be willing to be engaged in curriculum design as well as collaboration with other faculty members in the Core curriculum.
Full-time faculty teach three courses per semester, supervise a minimum of two senior projects, and are assigned a group of advisees to whom they provide academic guidance throughout the year. In this position, faculty ordinarily teach one First Year Seminar, one English Composition course (each semester) and two additional courses. Faculty are expected to engage in community service to contribute to the development of AQB. This includes, but is not limited to, participation in academic committees, admissions interviews, moderation boards, faculty development workshops, faculty meetings, and additional administrative tasks, as needed.
We seek a faculty person who is truly interdisciplinary—someone who will creatively and intellectually challenge the standard tropes of the media studies mode. AQB seeks candidates with a broad perspective who can build upon the various course offerings now in place and develop a coherent and identifiable agenda for theoretically driven productions.
• PhD preferred, MA required
• Successful teaching experience
• Enthusiasm for the mission of the College to provide student-centered teaching, foster critical thinking, and incorporate writing throughout the curriculum
• Fluent in English; ability to speak Arabic is a plus
• ESL training preferred
• Successful experience teaching in a liberal arts context
• Ability to teach a wide range of topics
