Systems Administrator for Computing

The Division of Science, Mathematics and Computing (SMC division) seeks a Systems Administrator to provide curricular and research support for the SMC Division and its Computational Sciences Program, by identifying and maintaining software and hardware applicable to courses, faculty and student research projects, and other initiatives. This position will focus on maintenance, upgrade, and software configuration on division computers, desktop computers in teaching labs, as well as desktop computers, laptops, robots, and other hardware and software in faculty offices and the division’s research labs. A successful candidate will be a skilled and flexible professional who interfaces with faculty and oversees a small staff of student employees.

Responsibilities:
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot a variety of computer hardware on PC and Macintosh labs used by the SMC Division
  • Work to automate and scale support for classroom lab systems
  • Maintain computer operating systems used by the Computational Sciences Program, Data Analytics Concentration and SMC Division, including computer teaching labs, research labs, mobile teaching laptops, and faculty computers
  • Maintain printers in the printing rooms and faculty offices
  • Identify, install, and maintain specialized software on all computers within the division, including virtual machines on some computers
  • Train and manage a small staff of student employees
  • Coordinate with Bard IT to identify shared needs and possible efficiencies
  • Maintain connection to the networking infrastructure maintained by Bard IT
  • Maintain system documentation for supported systems
  • Install and maintain security and system back-up and recovery for faculty computers and research lab computers
  • Provide user support for all faculty
  • Respond to emergencies and outages as needed
  • Meet regularly with the Computational Sciences program director
  • Work with and advise SMC faculty in the submission of equipment requests, budgets, and managing computing expenses
  • Train and supervise the CS department classroom monitors
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • A minimum of three years of experience in systems administration, preferably for an academic department in a Linux networked environment
  • Working knowledge of Linux on a broad range of hardware platforms
  • Familiarity with system installation and maintenance for Linux, MacOS, and Windows
  • Superior troubleshooting skills are required
  • Knowledge of systems administration automation
  • Experience supporting programming languages, IDEs, drop boxes, version control, SQL databases
  • Must be able to work efficiently and cooperatively with faculty and students. Strong interpersonal skills are important

Compensation Range: $58,000 to $63,000
This salary range reflects the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for the position at the time of the job posting. Salary decisions are dependent on several factors including but not limited to market and organizational considerations, experience, and qualifications of a selected candidate as well as internal and external equity.
